I bought my mother an iBook late last year for Christmas. Twice now she has reported the following: the computer emits a 'humming' sound, the screen goes solid black, the computer heats up to temperature that is hot to the touch. Following my instructions, she unplugs the computer and removes the battery. After cooling down, the iBook seems to work normally. Again, this has happened twice over about 4 months.

Talking to AAPL was a waste of time. The tech services guy's only advise was to 'have it looked at'. Great, no problem putting the box in a repair shop for a few months to see if it happens again. I asked about a possible battery/charging problem, and he basically went 'stupid' saying only that the company's policy about battery problems come 'from the top'. He was unwilling to describe the symptoms exhibited by the battery/charing problems that precipitated the recent recalls.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

that link is to apples battery recall page, that might be a good place to start. other than that, my only other suggestion is one you've probably already checked--ensuring proper airflow. hope this helps
