I'm thinking of getting a MacBook - but wanted to check that my software would still work. Specifically, I'm using Adobe CS (version 1) and Microsoft Office X, plus a few others.
I realise these won't be 'native' on the Intel, but will they at least function respectably?

According to ARS technica's review of the new iMAC, everything ran. Non-universal stuff was slower by a little in most functions, alot in a few. But his final comment was that nothing he threw at it died.

I would imagine things will improve with our $100-$300 upgrades to all the new versions :-)

I'd expect to see most software follow one or two of three paths to a Universal Binary:
Free upgrade for current version owners
$10-50 "crossgrade" for current version owners
$300+ regular upgrade price for the next version

Having just recently played around with an iMac Intel version at a local reseller, I can confirm that both Office X and Photoshop CS will work on a MacBook Pro. General comments at the store from one of the repair guys was that Photoshop on the Intel box was slightly slower then his iMac 2.0 G5, but nothing to really be concerned with. He did note the Intel system had a harder time with large files, but their display unit only had 512MB ram compared to his G5 having 2 gigs.

For me, the performance on Office X seemed more then acceptable for what I would need it for. I did play around with Photoshop, but don't normally use it to be able to judge it.

I guess what some of us want to know is how Flash, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Photoshop (obviously my list) perform on:

G4 1.67GHz

vs.

Intel Core Duo (either speed)

various tests, etc. I've not seen anything conclusive yet, like, "the G4 rotated 3 seconds slower, and the Unsharp Mask filter also took 5 seconds longer. Flash Publish took 10 seconds longer", etc. That's what I'd like to know.

Thanks for all these replies - it's put my mind at rest. I don't want to have to upgrade at the same time as splashing out on one of these lovely sounding machines.
