Hello again guys!

First at all thanks for all the earlier replies about the ibook (I already ordered a clamshell and can’t wait to get it).

Now i want to buy an OS X to install in my clamshell.

Initially I’ll have only 128mb of RAM (I’ll need to save some more before a proper RAM upgrade, as my Phd fees are quite ‘demanding’), so which one will perform better?
Jaguar or Panther? (I don’t know much about Aqua, but everyone seems to think that is the worst so far). And I guess that Tiger is too much for such a little machine.
In terms of price I guess that jaguar will be much cheaper, as is also older.

Also, as I’ll have either an external cdrw-dvd or internal (if I manage to swap the cd), does any of these OS have embedded any DVD software player and CD burning programs?

Well, something else that I’ll need is some sort of office program, but I read somewhere that OpenOffice X is quite good, so I can save some pennies in buying it from Microsoft.

Well, that’s all folks.
Thanks a lot in advance for your replies.
Jon

"Aqua" is not an OS. It is the UI layer used by all versions of OS X.

Why would you go out of your way to get a clamshell? They're limited to 800x600 resolution, so the screen will be tiny.

Each version of OS X has gotten faster than the last even on the same hardware, so go with the newest one yours can run. If your clamshell has FireWire, you can run 10.4. If not, the best you can do is 10.3. 10.2 is to be avoided, as many apps require 10.3+.

Yes, the OS can burn CDs and play DVDs.

NeoOffice is the preferred implementation of OpenOffice.org (not the same thing as OpenOffice) for OS X. It will run very poorly on that machine. In fact, everything will run poorly on that machine if you don't max out the RAM. If your main focus is word processing, I recommend AbiWord instead.

Jon,

I run Tiger on a 466 SE firewire clam, top of the line for clamshells ;-)

It had 128mb of ram when I installed it. It ran OK, albeit slow on start-up, etc. I upgraded to 512mb which pepped it up incrementally - 4 times the ram isn't 4 times as fast.

The fact is though, this is an old machine. It has very limited upgrade potential, and I'm lucky to be able to do much with it. But I think they are about to go over the hill, leaving resuscitation to the enthusiasts.

It was great as a portable, but my battery died, as they tend to do, so now I have to drag the power adapter around my wireless apartment because I'm loath to spend another $100+ on a machine with a street value of only a few hundred bucks (the 512mb ram cost me $100).

It does allow me to surf, e-mail, and best of all, plug directly into my tv to watch dvd's.

And Wataru is right, the resolution is scant, so running the new OS means scrolling this way and that all the time. OS X 10.4 is a sweet system, and I feel lucky to be able to run it, but it wasn't made for these machines.

If it's not too late, change your order to a later generation G3, as others have recommended - they're faster, affordable, and upgradable, which means whatever you invest, it will last longer, and therefore cost less...

I had (and still have) a 466FW and loved it - now, however, I'd want to run OSX on it like I want to stick pins in my eyes. Instead, I have left OS9, and use the version of Virtual PC that I have, which does not work with OSX - One hell of a speed demon!

David.
