I just bought a firewire external enclosure and a 160GB Seagate hard drive and it isnt working on my iBook G4. I put the enclosure and hard drive together correctly and just plug the thing in and then OS X recognizes it. The problem is that when i try to use disk utility to partition it, disk utility just stops responding.

I looked into it a bit, does it have something to do with the fact that this enclosure is a Bytecc that uses an Oxford 911 chipset? and if it is is there anyway i can fix this problem?

I just bought a FW/USB 250GB external Maxtor HD and it wouldn't partition or erase on my G5 dual 1.8MHz. So I took it into work and the techs formatted it on a PC and then partitioned and erased it on a Mac. Then when I got it home, it gave me the same trouble again when connected to my G5! First I tried FW, then USB, and when preparing to send it back for an RMA, I plugged it into the FW port again and it mounted! Then I copied my iTunes and iMovies to it, and it "seems" to be working, but I am suspicious of it. I will keep it for a while and try to use it regularly. Maybe it take a little coaxing to get an external HD to work.

The firmware might need to be updated on that thing. I've got the Java-based OS X flasher for it, and the latest firmware image, if you're interested.

Just drop me a line at tom@tomkarpik.com, and I'll send them over.
