Hi,

I have an old g3 500 ibook that I am trying to fix up to give to my sister. It boots up fine but after 10 minutes or so, it always seems to shut down by itself.

Do you have any ideas on what it could be? Could it be the fan or something related to the power?

Please help with any ideas.

Thanks so much!!

Check/replace the reed/switch cable to see if it makes any difference.

Hi,

Can you please tell me where the reed/switch cable is?

It also seems that whenever I unplug the ibook, and even though the battery holds a charge, the date and time resets on every boot.

Thanks for your help!
Steve

Hi,

The reed switch/screen cable is the cable that runs between the hinge from the screen to the logic board. I should have asked before, but are you sure it's not the backlight just going off and not the whole machine?

The data and time problem sounds suspicious, could be a PMU or PRAM problem. Is your PMU reset button on the side stuck in by any chance?
