I've recently noticed that my 15" Al PowerBook's lid no longer 'pops' open when I press the release button. I have to get my nail under the lid and literally pull up the lid to open it. I've never seen this on my Ti or my 12" Al PowerBooks. The PowerBook has been treated like a baby, no dropping, no squeezing. The magnetic lever still pops out properly and the release button still releases the lever, it's just that the release button doesn't pop up the lid the half inch or so it used to. It's as if the lid hinge has lost its 'spring-loading'. And since I don't have long nails it' quite a pain to open the lid now.

Anybody else experience this? Any fixes? Ideas?

Is the hinge loose at all? Maybe if you tighten it up it will spring back to life (pun intended). That is if you have or can find that special screwdriver.

I've actually experienced the exact opposite with my iBook, it doesn't like to stay shut. Looks like after almost 4 years the metal catch inside has worn down a little and doesn't hold it tight. If I bump the table it is on or put a glass down the thing pops open. Sometimes enough to wake itself up.

Actually, my hinge is quite tight. It feels more like it just doesn't want to pop up after I release the magnetic lever.

Could it be that the area around the screen close to the lever is to close to the base? If I look from the side it looks like the lid is not perfectly straight, but bent towards the base where the lever is. Maybe from grabing it there when I carry it around? Could that have any influence?

I noticed in the meantime that inserting a small eraser (about 2 mm high) between the lid and the case solves the problem. Obviously the lid is not 'springing' because there's not enough force acting against the latch. I guess the rubber pads Apple puts onto the lid are just not thick enough. Additionally they are only on the sides but not at the center where my hand applies pressure to the lid when carrying it around.

Does anybody know if there are replacement rubber pads that increase the gap between the lid and the base?

i use drawer stops that came with my drawer set from ikea. it seems to do the trick just fine, but i do think radtech specializes in making the product youre looking for.

iRez, you are the only person here who understands that.

I have often posted this kind of remarks and have been completely ignored. Wildpeez are indeed exactly the same stuff that ikea and others use for their drawers. The powerbook feet that radtech sells (pawz I think) can be bought for a couple of cents at walmart. Their hinge maintanance set is plain oil and some tools that smart people have in their toolbox or can be bought for few dollars.

I have bought a TiBook that came with Wildpeez and a Radtech Notebook ScreensavR. The Wildpeez are a joke for 13 $. (But the screensaver is nice. At least a little bit better than the silk that I used before).

So Simon, please go to ikea, not to Radtech.

Thanks for the tip guys. I'll check Ikea on my way home from work next week.

And yes, charging $12.95 for a pair of plastic pads is a rip-off.
