Hey folks,

I'm loving my 3rd 12" iBook...but I just noticed that the glowing Apple logo on the flipside of the LCD has a darkened area near the bottom right. Anyone else have this problem? I don't really care for it, since I'll never notice it. I was just curious.

Thanks

Have you ever opened the ibook? It seems like there is a bit of dust between the plastic and the lcd panel. If you turn the brightness all the way and then take a pic does it look the same? what does it look like if the ibook screen is off, or if the lights are on?

I've never opened up my iBook. This is actually the 3rd one in the last week. I returned the inital one because of the latch not working right. The second one, I opened it up at the store and there was a 4" scratch on the lid. The third one was, what I thought, perfect. I just noticed the black spot last night...I can't see it when the iBook is off, but at low brightness..it's faint. The brighter the screen, the darker the spot gets. I really don't want to return the iBook for a new one. I'm getting tired of updating/installing software. Wondering if I can just make an appointment with a Genius to have them check it out.

they should be able to take the top cover off in house and repair it right there. there are a million sites showing how to take the top lid off to mod the color of the apple logo, if youre feeling brave.
NOW YOU SEE ME! 2.4 MBP and 2.0 MBP (running ubuntu)

It's within the first 14 days. If I took it apart and found that it was an exploded capacitor that oozed onto the logo, they could deny fixing it because I opened the casing. I'll try to take it to the Apple Store on Thursday...

It's really making me think of the QA differences between the i-series and Power-series... Maybe I'll just return it and buy a PowerBook or sell the extra gig of ram and buy an LCD. *shrug*

Thanks folks

Wow - that's a drag

I'm sorry you had such bad luck with your iBook. I've had my iBook (same specs as yours) since early August and haven't had one issue with it thus far [knock on wood] - and I've taken it everywhere. If anything, try one more iBook. They're solid, capable machines and Apple doesn't put shoddy products in any of their computers.

Good luck!

Yeah! I love my iBook. I need to get that logo thing checked... It might be cancerous!

I took it to the Apple Store Genius and he had the guys in the back check it out. They said it wasn't detrimental, so they weren't gonna do anything about it. I ended up doing the surgery at home. I undid the screws using a 1.5mm L wrench. I opened the casing with my thumbnail..running it down casing to undo the lip. Inside, I found a "holey" foam layer and a piece of vinyl tape that defused the light from the backlight. I looked under the tape and found a round white sticker with the letter "F" on it. Must be some inspection sticker...poorly placed, of course. I couldn't get to the sticker, so I x-acto'd some of the vinyl just to lift it away to get to the F sticker. Took out the F sticker and used it to hold the white vinyl tape in place (lol). Put everything back together and now I'm a happy camper. If anything, i'll get something transparent to put between the backlight and lid... [i]a la[il] Clarus iBook.
