Problem: upgraded my stock Fujitsu 40 Gig HD on a 867 mHz Tibook, 1 Gig Ram ,with a new Seagate Momentus 80 Gig HD 2.5" 5400.2 8mb. When powering on I get the old Mac OS smiley face w/"?" flashing. Thought the drive might be bad, so i put the Fujitsu back in. Same result.
Okay, what did I do (or didn't do)?

Please help - i feel like an idiot ! Thanks.

Just to cover the bases: Have you tried booting off a Mac OS installation CD? And if you have, then have you tried resetting your PRAM?

Yes, probably the startup disk info is lost while you removed your battery. Just put in a bootable cd and hold 'c' during startup. If you have already cloned your os to the new drive it may also help to repair permissions (after starting from a cd). That was the reason why my new momentus drive did not start the first time.

Maybe a simple question... but did you format and install the OS on the new drive?

Thank you "brother 337", "Dr. Michael", and "chipchen",
to answer all of your advice and questions, when booting up from a cd, the new drive was never "sen" by the computer, so I could not reformat, or install the OS, nor did resetting the PRAM make any difference. I have since taken the machine in to a repair shop. I may have damaged the ribbon when removing it from the hd. As I mentioned earlier, when I reinstalled the drive, it would not start up either. I will post the fix as soon as i hear from the shop. Thanks to you three for your input.

Update on the this matter:

I now have the powerbook back and working. The problem was caused by my damaging the cable when removing it from the old drive. Should have used a flat blade instead of my fingers when removing the cable. the price for my mistake: $140 plus a day down. Well, I learned something. Thanks to brother337, Dr.Michael, and chipchen for your input. This matter can be considered resolved.
