I have exactly the same problem. iBook G4, 2 years old, and just in the past 2 weeks, something has caused it to almost always hang on startup. The spinning indicator freezes, and the mac hangs. About one time in 20, it won't hang, and I can boot up.

Attempting to reboot with an external drive plugged in via firewire resulted in a crash as well.

Any ideas? I'd appreciate any feedback.

Hi, I save the same issue, identical.
Lonewalker, did you replaced the optical drive and the problem just disappears?
I´ve used the Apple Hardware Test and it don´t find any errors...
But, when I try to use TechTool (booting via CD) it freezes every time.

If you can help me.

Parkblvd, let´s keep in touch to each other to try to solve this problem.

Thanks a lot, Tuta

I have the same problem as ryanparrish. It's a 14 inch 1Ghz iBook G4. When I press the power button, a fan noise starts, and thats it. There's no chime, the screen stays black. The CD drive wont accept CDs. I tried resetting the PRAM (but then, theres no chime so it didnt work). I tried single user mode (again, nothing happened). I tried resetting the PMU (and nothing). I removed the battery and AC power for a while, then replaced them. I removed all third party hardware and the airport card, then tried all of the above again. Can anyone help? If not, I have a very expensive fan.

ryan-
I discovered the source of the probelm. it's a failed logic board. A lawsuit resulted in Apple agreeing to fix the problem free of charge if your serial number falls within the range UV117XXXXXX to UV342XXXXXX. If it's an iBook G4, then you're SOL, like me. There's a petition to extended the service agreement to the ibook G4s, which are having the same problem. See the following links:

Hey guys, just try putting in the install disk of mac osx that came with your ibooks. Then hold command- C when the ibook is booting with the dvd in the drive.

With this problem, 1) the iBook wont accept CDs and 2) the iBook doesn't boot, so booting off a disk is moot.

So your saying when you turn the ibook on, you hear the chime and you see the big apple logo, but that little spinny thing never goes away? Wait, did you already get your problem fixed?
