Here's the quick and dirty:

My superdrive is not working. I am sometimes able to pull data from a CD, and DVD's play for a few mintues before an error message is displayed. The one thing I cannot do is write information onto a cd. I have tried to burn CD's through Finder, iPhoto, and iTunes to no avail.

I really hope this is not a hardware issue and that it can be solved with an OS reinstall or something. It appears by reading the Apple discussion forums that alot of people have been having the same problem very recently.

My warranty is voided (I replaced my cracked LCD screen by myself instead of paying $900 for Apple to do it) so I'm not sure if i can get this replaced for fixed for free. If your computer warranty is voided can Applecare still be bought, and used?

Thanks for the help in advance.

EDIT: This is an iBook g4, bought in August 2005.

I don't think you can get AppleCare if your warranty is void.

Why not buy a replacement DVD-R from NewEgg ($90) and install it yourself. If you've replaced the LCD, you must be a little handy with a screwdriver.
