Which upgrade would you recommend I do first for my 466MHz iBook? Boosting the RAM from 320MB to 640MB or boosting the drive from the stock 4200RPM 10GB to a 5400RPM 40GB? Both of the upgrades would be around $100 all told, and while I'd like to do both I'll probably only do one initially.

are you running 9 or X?

if X, then get the ram first. you will notice and immediate speed increase on just about everything. you may want to consider an external hd since you got firewire, unless you just gotta have everything in one case.

Max out RAM, then get a bigger, better drive. In that order, even if you're running OS 9 on it. While it doesn't seem to be as dramatic in improving performance with 9, you need RAM to be able to fully take advantage of a faster drive.

RAM first, no question. I've mentioned this before in the 7200RPM drive thread, but I didn't see much of a speed increase upgrading my iBook G4 from a 40GB 4200RPM drive to a 80GB 7200RPM one.

Assuming you will do both, RAM first. But, as a practical matter, I don't know how anyone uses OS X on a 10GB disk. Some do it with less!
bb iBook 300MHz / 278MB / 40GB / OS 10.2.8 / OS 9.2
iBook 700MHz / 640MB / 40GB / OS 10.3.9
iBook 900MHz / 640MB / 40GB / OS 10.3.9
PowerPC 604 / 72MB / 3GB / OS 7.5.5

Since it's unanimous, I'll get the RAM first. I was leaning that way anyway but am still quite tempted by the drive upgrade because it is has become difficult to run OS X on so little free space.

bumping my clamshell from the 128mb that it came with to 576mb was well worth it...the 40gb 5400rpm drive wasn't a bad upgrade either
