i have two questions does anyone know if the the apple stores have MBP in stock, or when they would get it, like say apple soho.

if so do you think the 120gb hd is worth the one month wait for people who order like today.

also, my ibook is dead in the water do you think getting the mac book pro is worth it or should i get another ibook ppc (i cant wait months until the intel ibook comes out however. )?

As far as I know, no stores have the MBP in stock. I suppose they could get them in, but I'd be surprised to see them beyond demo models in the next couple of weeks, as people have pre-orders in. They might put some in to have it available in another channel, but it might frustrate some customers.

My understanding is that the 120GB HD actually might let you get the unit sooner, based on what I've seen in this thread. No one knows for sure though. The way I see it, at this point there's no direct linkage between the configured machines vs. stock machines to ship time.

I'd expect it'll at least be Spring before you see the consumer portable drop in with Intel chips.

The Apple stores will not hold back inventory until online pre-orders are filled. They never have nor ever will. When they get them they will sell them.

Right right, they won't hold it back. The question is whether they'll get them as there are so many pre-orders.

I'm not sure how being a student makes it especially sad for you....

Ahh, yeah, so it's bad for you because your machine is broken. That's not a good for anyone. Mine is about to break, so I just want it to arrive before it does.

In case of the ide drives, 120 GB seagate drives are substantially faster than 100 GB seagate drives. I did not check this for the sata drives, but I assume this is the same because only the interface has changed with sata.

Also it might not be clear if the drive will be a seagate (but there are few if any alternatives in the 120 GB region).

so here is my question... is speed all that important. my current (broken ibook) had a 60gb hd with like 2 gb left. so i thought that the 120 gb would be enough to fill my needs?? but i was worried about the 100 not being enough (particularly not after the data transfer)

If you have only 2GB left, your system will likely slow down anyway because OS X uses a lot of virtual memory.

It is your decision, if speed is important.
The 100 GB drive will already be faster than your iBook drive. If your iBook does a good job, there is no reason to spend money on more speed. Also the price difference of the 100 and 120 GB drives hurt.

80$ after student discount, you are right about that the difference for just and extra 20gb of space between the 100gb and the 120gb

Yeah, $4 per gigabyte is pretty steep, but that's what you pay above 100GB in a laptop drive. I still think the extra storage is worth it. No matter how big my drive, I always seem to fill it.

Suggestion:

If your school has support for macs, maybe they could pop your drive into a machine of theirs (pending the proper adapter) in their lab, and copy the data you need for the interm.

Price the MacBook out on Amazon - you may have to wait longer, but for me, it was 126.00 CHEAPER to go through Amazon (with A9.com discount and 150.00 rebate) than go through Apple student pricing.
