I currently have a Dual 2.0 G5 with 1.5GB 3200RAM and 128MB Graphics card.

Will the new, 2.0 Ghz MacBook Pro be faster than my PowerMac G5?

Will a MacBook Pro with:

2Ghz Core Duo
1.5 GB 5300RAM
256MG Graphics card

really be FASTER and perform better than my current

2.0Ghz PowerMac G5
1.5 GB 3200RAM
128 Graphics card

????

Looking at the specs, I want to say the MacBook will be faster, but I would like the input of people who know more about Mac tech than I do.

Thanks!

It will be faster in some situations and slower in others. For the most part, however, it will be slower. At least until the software is ported and optimized for the Intel processors. What do you use your Mac for?

I use it for iTunes and iLife. MS Office, Adium, Bookpedia, Google Earth, Grammatica, and Safari. Also, for some VERY basic games like Minesweeper and chess.

(lol. Why do I even have a dual G5?)

Do you still think it will be slower?

(thanks for your previous reply)

In the unported apps (Google Earth, MS Office, etc), it'll be slower since you'll be emulating PowerPC. In all of the iLife apps, it should be roughly on par with your current system. If you have the money, you pretty much get the power of your current machine in a portable form factor, so I'd say to get it.

Just wanted to follow up. Today I test Google Earth and MS Office on an Intel Mac for about an hour. I could notice no speed difference on either of the applications. I was particularly surprised by this with Google Earth. It was as snappy, fluid and responsive under Rosetta as it is on a PowerPC.

Google Earth and MS Office won't be slower. The speed might be the same or faster, but not slower. All the other apps mentioned scream on the Macbook, so yes the G5 is slower.
MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.7), 1.6 GHz, Core i5, 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3, 128 GB SSD, 24" LED ACD, 1TB Time Capsule (late 2009), IOS4 ATV, 16GB iPhone 4

Sorry, Peter, the Intel Core Duo is not that much faster than a dual G5 and can be slower. The benchmarks I have seen show them to be roughly equivalent in many things (exceptions are boot time and games that are already UBs). It might be marginally faster than a similarly clocked/specced (graphics card) G5 overall, but not by much.

The Intel iMac is faster than the G5 iMac because of 1) the extra processor core and 2) the better graphics card etc. but it isn't magically faster than dual G5s just because it is an intel processor.
