I have been window user throughout my life. I just wanted to know what sofware in the mac are similar to daemon tools or alcohol 120%. I need a virtual cd/dvd-rom emulator mac version.

Thanks

I am also a windows user, at least for a couple more months, but I imagine the native OS X capabilities you describe aren't what wasd was looking for. Daemon Tools sets up a virtual drive that emulates copy protection features to allow the user to run a program (like a game) from the disk image as if it were the original disk; it's not just a tool to read/write disk images.

Yup, built into the OS.

Usually youll get mac software in .dmg format, which is a disk image. However, Macs can natively read .ISO formats used by PCs, and mount them as a drive

My question is, what exactly would you run on the Mac that would need a specific disk image emulation app?

I can't think of anything other than (swiped) games, and I wouldn't expect an overabundance of those. Most production apps like Aperture, Photoshop, etc. don't need the disc in the drive, just a license key typed in.

Well from my own experience on PCs, it's nice to just have a drive with disc images on it for when I need to reinstall a program. Much faster than reading from a disc.

For games, it's not necessarily to say it's a pirated game. Again, it's a speed issue and/or a convenience issue, and when content (like video, etc) loads from a CD / DVD (or the game even just wants to check for the disc to authorize playing of the game), it's much faster to just have an image loaded than to put the physical disc in and wait for the drive to read it.

I don't know if this is what he's needing, but that's what my PC-based use of images has been. Beautiful that it's built into OS X and so easy to use. Just give him time-- if he's new to mac he doesn't realize all the differences in the way software works on them yet.

It is built into the OS. For a more robust solution, Toast images (Roxio) work great too.
