Hello
im getting a macBook (when it comes!?)
I have an iMac 500mhz (blue case) with an airport card 0x8863<Up....b6.....multicast
and i want to know if i can go on the internet with my new mac book via the use of the iMac and its current airport card. Is it possible or are these technologies not suited.
If not is there a cheaper option than than the airport express?
thankyou if you can tell me

If your iMac has a cable broadband connection then you will be able to tell your mac to 'send' the broadband signal out over wireless. however, it would be more efficient to get yourself a wireless router, as you would not tie up the iMac just basically being a 'wireless server'.
To use the iMac in the way you said, go to sys preferences > sharing > internet, and there you can choose how to share your connection.

Linksys have always made good wireless routers. This one for example:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...e&n=172282
It has 4 ethernet ports, and wireless G and B. You will, however, need to make sure you already have a modem, but i'm sure you have seeing as you already have broadband.

Using the iMac, you'd be restricted to the wireless B standard which is slower than the G standard that your MacBook has built in.

Though for what he needs this wont matter - as he didnt mention file sharing, and I very much doubt his broadband speed is faster than 11 Mbps!

B is already insufficient for me. In France, most of us get Internet at significantly higher speeds than 11MBps. I've got 24MBps through Free. And it's not just for web surfing. Multipost TV (Video over IP), which allows you to watch TV on your computer using VLC, works fine with wireless G but it doesn't work with wireless B.

Wha?! Here in the UK, almost the max you can get in a residential area is 8 MBps, and only very highly populated areas (like London) can get this. Standard speed BB is clocked at a lousy 2MBps!

30 Euros a month gets you 24MBps, free unlimited national and international telephone calls, and access to video on demand and 100 or so television channels (of which about 40 are free).
It's insane but who's complaining.

Other ISPs are offering similar products.

Ok, I take it back. The French really are good for something afterall. I pay about $75/month for digital cable (with free on demand programming, but most of it is a couple years old) and broadband (download speeds "up to" 6Mbps). No phone.
