Powerbook Line in to Speakers?

I was wondering is it possible to have a signal from the line in port on the power book outputted to the headphone out jack or the powerbooks speakers or is it strictly for recording purposes only? The sound meter in sound prefrences shows that there is indeed a signal going into the line in port but I can't hear it from the speakers.
