I'm getting a lot of track errors when ripping CDs. Especially the last few tracks are riddled with squeaks, beeps, crackles.

It's definitely my hardware because when I play the CD on a CD player, there is no problem. Also, there is no problem with downloaded mp3 files.

Can someone please tell me how I can solve this highly annoying problem?

1. When you play the audio CD (just to listen, not to rip) using the same computer hardware, does it play fine or does it skip in the same areas?

2. What are you using to rip the audio tracks? iTunes? Finder? I recommend using Max which uses CDParanoia to prevent clicks and pops.

Thanks for the reply.

Good question. I hadn't tried this. The answer is yes. The CD plays fine in my computer (a 12" PBook SuperDrive) but when I rip it, it certain tracks (especially the last tracks on the CD) are riddled with loud, annoying squeaks, bleeps and skips.

iTunes.

Is Max free?

Why am I getting skips when ripping with iTunes?

Is there any other way to rip without skips?

By the way, under "iTunes>Preferences>Advanced>Import Using" which Encoder should I use? AAC? AIFF? Apple Lossless Encoder? MP3 or WAV? I have no idea what these do or what they mean. At the moment it is set to AAC Encoder.

Mm. Ok. Downloaded Max and ripped problem tracks, all skip free.

Thanks for the link.

First off, thanks for the idea. I just ripped a cd and found some tracks were skipping all over the place. The CD is clean and free from physical damage. Even just playing back the CD in iTunes it was skipping and what not. (note: this is on a Dell laptop. The MacBook has yet to ship ). Upon reading this thread I tried listening in a normal CD player and found it played fine. Whew.

I'm not familiar with CDparanoia. Is this at all similar to Exact Audio Copy for other operating systems? Meaning, will this thing do everything possible to error check and error correct to get accurate rips?

Depends on what you want. If you want compressed but lossless (meaning no data has been lost in compression-- the sound quality is exactly CD quality), then use Apple Lossless. Otherwise I'd recommend AAC over MP3 through iTunes. If you use Max to rip your CDs, LAME is pretty awesome for mp3 encoding.

FothB-- thanks for the tip on Max. In my transition to Mac I was looking for something comparable to EAC+Lame. Max sounds even better since it'll rip to AAC and Apple Lossless, and do it all on a Mac

There are lots of causes for skips. iTunes itself does offer some error correction to prevent them though. Under Preferences -> Advanced -> Importing there's a checkmark for "Use error correction". Checking that box should, in theory, take care of your iTunes ripping related skipping problems.

I'm glad to hear that you got things working in the end.
