ok guys & gals... i have a 1.67ghz powerbook with 80 gigs of internal drive space data that i CANNOT afford to lose! i don't do any fancy video editing (*yet, but possibly in the future) i think what im looking for is maybe a one touch solution, or something i can administer myself with a separate partition for non critical files i don't want to keep on my book (its getting kinda full)... i know all you macs headz are into the lacie thing, im a seagate & wd fan myself and have never owned a lacie product. any ideas, suggestions, you're stoopid comments are welcomed! cheers!

I got an 80GB Travelstar 7200rpm drive and put it into a USB/Firewire case I got on ebay. Just over $200.

I have a WD one touch (actually I have 2 of them, an 80GB and a 120GB). I use the 80GB to back up my Powerbook G4 15" I thikn it fits into your budget range (Circuit City/Best Buy/Staples often have them on sale with rebates). I have been using it for about a year. Here are my thoughts:
The backups are simple, you press one button, but they are also long (I have about 40GB of data on my drive, and it takes a couple of hours to run a backup). The good thing is that it does not need constant monitoring, so I press the button, and then leave to do whatever, and when I return my backup is done.
That being said, I have never had to test this out. I can say, that on occasion I have had to pull a few files from this drive after I deleted them from my internal HD prematurely. That worked fine. And I can see all my data files are on that drive. But I have never had to restore my drive, so I cannot speak to how that works.
But I do recommend the drive if what you are seeking is this low-level backup strategy. Obviously it does not protect you in terms of fire (unless you store it somewhere different from your powerbook). For my purposes it works quite well, and I also make DVD backups every few months that I keep in various locations.
I hope that helps.
O
B unce!

thanx, i think im leaning towards the iogear tri-select stuff... i can use a one touch for my system backup. and use the rest of the drive for spare storage. also the usb allows me to back up older pcs before reformats! as far as the fire thing goes.. if im out of the house, my book goes with me, if the house catches fire, my book is going out the window with me
