Now that my Macbook is on it's way, I was wondering if you guys could give me some pointers about migration assistant. I have never used this utility before, and was wondering if it will transfer everything without issue. For previous migrations, I have just backed up my home directory and then moved it over to the new system. This has worked fine, but if migration assistant is easier, and will not cause problems down the road, I would rather use it. Can anyone comment on their experience with migration assistant?

It's great! Yes, it will transfer almost everything with no issues at all. There may or may not be a couple of minor 3rd party elements that don't make it. However, in my experience it carried over 99.9% of everything.

When you first power-up your new machine it will ask you if you want to use MA. Just follow the instructions.

However, if I was you I'd first do a disk wipe and a full reinstall of the system using the enclosed disks. Then use MA. I've had issues with the factory install in the past so I always do this to prevent any problems.

Thanks. I'll give it a try. If all else fails I can just move my data over manually, but if it saves time that is great!

It works well..TOO well. It imported EVERYTHING. If you're like most people, that includes a whole lot of stuff that you've accumulated over time and don't need. and a bunch of apps that you never use or might not work on an Intel. I'm considering wiping the disk and starting over without the migration assistant, to start with a clean slate.
