I have a PB G4 with the CD-RW/DVD

how do I find out what zone is it set for (I assume US since that is where most of my movies are from).

Can I set it for zone-free or will it read multi-zone DVDs?

I have heard rumors of playing a zone 5 times will set it for that zone - forever and that many of the settings are firmware/hardware based

VLC allows you to play back movies from any zone (whereas Apple's DVD Player only lets you change the zone a few times).

I have used VLC several times - and like it. Is there an easy way (for personal and legal means of course) of downloading DVDs onto my laptop in various formats (mp3, qt, etc)

Unnecessary. VLC allows you to play directly from DVD.
