I just bought a 512mb ram chip for my 12 inch power book which currently has 256 builtin.
How much of a speed/performance increased will I experience?
was it worth it?

Oh, yes, it was very much worth it. Ram upgrades are one the best things you can do for your computer. While a 1gb upgrade would have been ideal, I think you will notice a much more responsive Mac experience, especially with 2 or more programs open at once.

I've also found that once you get under 20GB of HD free it slows down. Once you get it down to <5GB you'll really notice.

So what I'm trying to say is that OS X really benefits from RAM and scratch disk space.

I concur with the <20GBs of space slow down. I have about 17Gbs free now, and I was able to notice a difference. Now I gotta clean it out and get rid of a bunch crap hidden in there.
