Hi Everyone,

I'm a proud owner of a new MBP. And i see that a bunch of you have reformatted the computer and did a clean install from the disk.

How do you guys reformat your computers, i know there are many ways right?

Just wanna know some opinions.

Thanks.

The only reason you should bother is if you want to get rid of the foereign languages, unwanted print drivers and any unwanted bundled apps.
In which case an erase and install should be more than sufficient.

Use the Mac OSX disc which came with your MBP. Open the "Install Mac OSX and Bundled Software". This will restart your MBP and allowd you to completely wipe you HDD and reinstall OSX from scratch. I did this when I got my PB. I think after taking out all the unneeded language files and the printer drivers, I managed to gain about 3-4GB. And when you're working with a laptop, that can be quite a big difference.

I plan to repartition my hard drive before I start using mine. I'll probably set aside 15GB or so (I got the 120GB drive) for alternate operating systems. I know I'm going to want to have linux installed, and Windows would be nice to have around at some point if that's ever working. It's easy to repartition when a machine is new... hard to do so when the drive is full of stuff you want to keep.

I presume you use Disk utility to repartition the drive. Will it not erase everything when you do the re-partition and have to re-install the OS. Is there an easier way to re-partition without having the OS wiped out when the unit is new.

No. That's the point of repartitioning when the machine is new. It's easy to re-install the OS and included software; just use the restore discs.
