i've noticed recently my powerbook (12" G4 1.5ghz) has had a lot of hard drive activity. i've noticed the sound since i've had it (about a year)...you hear the hard drive read and then a few seconds later i can hear the drives park with a soft clink. it's nothing too bad, but in a quiet room when you start to notice it, it's torturous.
anyway, i've been watching the activity monitor and about every 5-15 seconds mds pops up on the activity roster and the red bars spike. then it stops and i hear the clinking sound. i think the two are related but i'm not sure. mds is doing something, that's for sure, but i don't know what.
i rarely ever use spotlight and i don't know what it could be indexing.
i have downloaded files from torrents and such. if they were corrupted or otherwise bad, could that through the mds process for a loop and make it keep cycling?
