I know there are several solutions around for protecting the Mac, but I believe what I'm looking for is easy to make for much less money, besides I can't stand all loud the advertising on those things

I have a carrying bag for my Powerbook, but I need something to protect between the screen/keyboard, and also a "pocket" for protecting against scratches.
So far I've used the polystyrene that came with my computer for the keyboard/screen, but that won't last forever:

However, I could use it as a template to cut out a new one from some sort of suitable material. What would be suitable material for this, and where could I buy it? I bet I need something really soft which won't be the least abrasive. Would cotton be fine, or something else? I've heard people suggest micro-fiber, but knowing that it's actually a plastic material I can't see how that wouldn't be pure sandpaper abrasive in the lomng run.

Then, for the computer itself I would like to make a "pocket" to slide it in. Not so much to protect it against beating, but against scratches, so I suppose the same material as protecting the screen from the keyboard should do. Here's an example of what kind of "pocket" I want to make: (radtech Sleevz)

Cotton would be an excellent material in terms of abrasiveness, but it would be a bit flimsy and might fold over on itself or slide out. Maybe if you got a really thick piece it would work.

I've alway used a clean sheet of printer paper between my PowerBook screen and keyboard when closed. I originally got into the habit with my Pismo (where the keyboard actually touched the screen) and just kept doing the same with my 12 inch 1.33 Al (trimming the paper a bit to fit)

I only close the screen when I need to transport it, to save on hinge wear, and I dont subject it to any abuse that my padded case wont handle, so I am not worried about providing additional shock absorption between screen and keyboard--just something to keep any keyboard grime off the screen.

Low tech, but you cant beat the price...

I currently use a plastic top to protect my PB15' from scratches. I had it manufactured so it actually fits the PB15' prefectly and if you're into designing your own stuff you can most definitely modify the shell to your liking! You can check my homepage out, you require Flash 8 though.

Anyone know what kind of material is used for camera-lens cleaning cloth? Since it shouldn't harm a camera lens it should be good enough for protecting a laptop screen.

Then again a cloth like that probably isn't used almost every day with a camera as with my Powerbook when transporting it around, so I'm wondering if this is the ultimate solution or if there's softer and more suitable fabric around?
