Have read lots about the MBP recently but nobody really mentioned anything about Java performance.

My friend got his MPB today, I tried building my code (a small project about 50 classes and 30 test cases) on his 2.0GHz MBP (1G RAM, 7200rpm HD) and it is about 3x faster, 14s compare to 49s, than my 1GHz G4 rev b (1.25G RAM, 7200rpm HD) Powerbook! I also tried running a Java IDE (IntelliJ) on it and the performance (auto complete is instant, no lag at all!) compare to my powerbook is really nite and day. I wish I could have done more performance tests on it but the machine is not mine

If you are a Java developer and currently coding on a G4 powerbook, you definately should get a MBP (I could be saving at least an hr of compile/run time a day by switching to the MBP).... I am now considering selling my old Smart to raise enough cash to get one of these

hope this information help some of you guys out there

I thought OS X Intel didn't support Java? Or is that just in Safari?

Only the embedded JRE inside a web browser doesn't work. You can still run Java applications.

the Java applications can't make kernel calls, though, right? or calls to powerpc specific components?
some people are like slinkys: they don't do much, but are fun to push down stairs.

This is good news.
You compare a 1Ghz Mac with a 2GHz Mac. So a factor two is already due to raw clock speed. But the remaining 1.5 is close to the difference between os x java and linux java.

Plase post java benchmarks in the developer forum. There you can also find a thread comparing linux and os x java
