Dear All,

I bought a used iBook G3 in March of 2005, and it has served me wonderfully since then. Recently, however, I have acquired a dilemma so interesting I almost don't want it fixed because of the vast curiousity and wonder it incites in people. (Almost.)

The problem concerns my "J" key, and my "J" key only. It does not work. But let me be more specific. When I simply press my "J" key, nothing happens. This occurs in all programs - not Just word or Firefox. However, as you may have noticed, my capital "J" works wonderfully. So it doesn't seem to be a mechanical problem, as the only failure is when the "J" key is struck alone. But wait, there's more.

The effects of caps lock immediately came to mind. When caps lock is on, and the "J" key is pressed alone, nothing happens. When I hold down shift, I get a capital "J." This leads me to believe that my "J" key only works when assisted by another key, such as shift. But wait, there's more.

When Num Lock is turned on, and my "J" key is morphed into a number 1, there is zero problem typing the number 1 with my "J" key. The plot thickens.

Let me know your suggestions and feel free to ask more questions. Thank you all very much.

Dear All,

The problem has been solved; you may now get some rest.

Don't ask me how, but when I opened up the System Preferences --> Speech --> Spoken User Interface, I had the J selected as the key to "Speak selected text when this key is pressed." And yet, I wasn't hearing the selected text when I pressed J.

Fascinating.
