I have a 1.67GHz 17" powerbook G4 (the current model). I have 2Gb of Crucial RAM in it. I have been having two ongoing issues:

1. It takes close to 40-60 seconds for my machine to go into sleep

2. About 1 in 5 times when I put it to sleep (by closing the lid) it doesn't go to sleep and after 2-3 minutes it just shuts down. When I restart the clock is reset.

I have had the machine in to Apple and there are no hardware issues. I have tried the PRAM reset and a reinstall of the OS without success. Is anyone else having a similar issue? Anyone got any ideas on what else I could try?

I have the same model PBook with the same issue. I say "issue" because #1 is normal activity: Starting with the DL powerbooks with the Safe Sleep feature, the contents of main memory are saved to the hard disk before sleeping, in case of total power loss.

But, I have noticed #2, and it's also intermittent as you describe (not sure if it's 1 in 5 or not, seems less frequent than that for me). I've tried a power manager reset, but don't think it helped.

Is that really true? I don't have one of the newer PowerBooks so I don't have any first-hand experience with this, but I always thought safe sleep was more of an option and not something that replaced normal sleep.

Ya, it's right here, straight from the mothership.

I am having the exact same problem with it shutting down/crashing after closing the lid -- clock reset and all. This has caused me to re-think the whole way I "sleep" my computer. Since I make my living developing FileMaker databases, I have to be extra careful not to leave one open when I put the PowerBook in sleep mode, as crashing it will corrupt the database. This is completely counterintuitive to the whole idea of putting the Mac to sleep. I might as well be shutting down.

Apple was not able to successfully diagnose this issue? This is dispiriting to me. I think I am going to give it a try, and see if I can get a replacement powerBook if they can't fix this one.
