I am trying to use my MacBook Pro in closed-lid mode. It works for about 10 seconds, and then it goes to sleep. I can wake it up again, but it still keeps going to sleep.
Anyone seen this before?

Not to hijack your thread as I have not done the lid closed thing, but....
It takes my HD at least 12 and up to 20 seconds to spin down after the lid is closed. What is up with that? My old PB-1.33 took 1-2 seconds.
Anyone else on either of these posts?

I think I answered my own question. Apparently you can't used the closed-lid mode on battery. I plugged it in and it seems to be working fine now.
Daniel: Same here. Yet another one of those small things I miss from my old 17" G4.

Is it the power profile you have selected or does closed-lid mode not work period when not connected to AC power?

Trying to use a Powerbook in lid closed mode using only the battery will not work and the computer will go to sleep. So it's not surprise that the MBP also does this. Having the computer plugged in with the AC connector is required. I just tried it with my 12" Powerbook, and it went to sleep immediately.
Also, to those who have a longer wait for the HD on the MBP to spin down, this may be because of safe sleep? I don't have a MBP, but I'm just guessing, since the contents of the RAM have to be written to your HD.

It's always been that way. Closed lid mode requires AC power to work. If you unplug it, the Book will go to sleep.

Yes, the last generation of Powerbooks does this as well.
The sleep light will shine bright for ten seconds or so while the RAM contents are written to disk, and only then will it start to "breathe".

Faulty power connector? Faulty charger? Does the plug fit snug?

Is there a way to disable 'safe sleep'? Or is it a built in feature?

Yes, there is. It would be stupid to do so, though -- the feature is there for a reason.
I can't possibly imagine how the machine taking a few more seconds to go to sleep is such a terrible thing, especially given that it protects your data should your battery crap out, but if you want to throw all the benefits away just so you get to a blinking light faster, google for "disable safe sleep".
