I've been running into a very strange issue with the number 3 key on my MBP and I need some other opinions.

The number 3 key and only the number 3 key works only under certain conditions. I was pretty much sure it was a HW issue and called Apple support to find out how to get the keyboard replaced, but he had me boot into Safe mode and that seemed to fix it, temporarily.
If I boot normally, and quickly lauch TextEditor or whatever it works for a bit. While typing I will usually get a beach ball, so some program is being started in the background. After that the 3 key usually stops working, but sometimes it does continue to work correctly.
However, it seems to always stop working whenever I bring the MBP out of sleep.

So HW or SW issue? Is there a way to find out what programs exactly are getting loaded during boot?

Hmm. That is odd.

If I had to guess, I would suspect HW. I would think you have an intermittent "thing" under the #3 key (whatever you call the thing that registers keystrokes). I'd call Apple back and ask them to replace it or look into repairing it. Like I said, just guessing.

I have had occasions when my entire keyboard stops working. It occurs most often in the morning when I have not used the keyboard in some time, but still this is a bit odd. I think we all may have to accept that we are the guinea pigs and the computer is going to have issues.
Bummer town.
