my friend has a 12" powerbook, and wants to go to the apple store to have it looked at.
she's out of warranty, and we've been told it's now $50. to have the 'book looked at.

is this true? (and how long has it been so)??

thanks!

As far as I know the Genius Bar is still free. To have it looked at more indepth is a charge.

Wikipedia says: Not all services at the Genius Bar are free; out-of-warranty products are serviced at an additional charge.

Getting it looked at is free. Running a complete back-of-house diagnostic, however, is not.

I was having problems with my iBook and took it to the local apple store. The guy at the desk had a tech come out and go through it. He spent about 10 minutes with it and, unfortunately came to the conclusion that I had reached myself. He never once said anything about a charge.

After talking about options for laptops for a few more minutes, he went in the back room and found a 15" PowerBook demo that they had just taken off the floor. Needing a laptop, I decided to buy it for $1500. I am really glad that I did.
