MBP blacklit keyboard not on ?

for some reason the light underneath the keyboard that was coming on a week ago has suddenly stopped. whats going on? maybe i turned it off? i didn't think there was an option to turn it off.
ive tested it in all kinds of light settings, its definitely not working.
anyone?

In the event anyone elese is having this problem - F8, F9, & F10 are the brightness controls. It also only comes on under relatively low ambient light.

slightly OT, but not enough for a new thread.
is it possible to disable the secondary uses for the f1-f12 keys? i have several games that i play and they use the function keys, but they just change my volume, brightness, etc without affecting the game. any ideas?
