I'm getting a G3 iBook 900 with the RAM maxed (640MB). I'll mostly be using it for school, but there are some other apps I'd really like to run. Can anyone let me know if these sound feasible?

OSX Tiger (It's currently running Panther)

Quake 3 Arena

Arturia MiniMoog V

Ableton Live 5

----------------------------------------------------

Also, I'm a little confused by the translucent keyboard. Does it illuminate or something? Just curious. Thanks a lot.

Oh, and is it possible to put a SuperDrive in it?

You can put a SuperDrive in it.

It will run Tiger without any issues and Quake 3 should be ok since it has a 32MB video card.

The other 2 apps I don't have any knowledge of.

The keyboard does not illuminate.

Congrats on the new iBook! You'll love it

You can definitely put Tiger on it. I had Tiger on a 500 MHz G3 iBook and it ran fine. If you don't like memory-heavy things like Dashboard, you can disable it. Otherwise, I thought it was great.

I'm sure that you could play Quake 3 on it. Try downloading the demo here and play it before spending your money on the full version.

I'm not sure about the other apps...I've never heard of them.

And like discotronic said, you could upgrade to a SuperDrive if you wanted. I've heard that Newegg.com has some great deals on slot-loading DVD-burners for under $100.

Unfortunately, the translucent keyboard is limited strictly to its color. It's not backlit.

Best of luck!

Another quick question. My girlfriend has a brand new iBook G4 which came with Tiger installed. Can I user her boot disks to put Tiger on my iBook G3?

Although I've never actually tried, I think you are able to...you should be able to pop in the DVD and upgrade Panther to Tiger if that's what you want to do.

I would say no. For the last couple years the disks that are shipped with new computers will only work on that model computer. Her disks may be different but it is doubtful.
