Just said goodbye to my TiBook 667 - I almost wept as I handed it to the Parcelforce (ouch!) collection guy. Ok, so it wasn't quite that emotional, but I do feel the need to post.

As I was packing it last night, it occured to me how I had become attached to it. Rather than a desktop, that laptop has actually been with me at many of the happiest and saddest moments of my life. For the last 4 years. I just hope the guy who purchased it appreciates the joy of opening the original box, and seeing the laptop packed in almost the same way it was when I first opened it.

In just a few more days I shall be placing my order for a MacBook Pro. I hope the experience will be just as pleasant.

So for those deciding whether to purchase a laptop or desktop, I whole heartedly say buy the laptop. It will become more than a computer. Especially if it is a Mac.

I know that feeling of sadness. After all, after several years of friendship, it's hard to let go.

Hope you feel happy with the macbook pro. I'm sure you will.

It's only an outdated machine. Any new machine that replaces it will be improved and therefore a better computing experience. Hardly something to get emotional about.

Eseentially I agree, but when you've worked on one machine for a long time and produced lots of good work on that machine, not to mention used it as an entertainment and communications centre all over the world, there is an emotional attachment.

Just recently, I suddenly felt nostalgia for the old Ericsson T39 phone I used to use. I've had better, more stable phones since I sold it on ebay a few years ago, but I still missed it. Ended up buying one on ebay and still love it and now use it as my main phone. Sound quality is great, battery life is outstanding, the screen is always clear in sunlight, reception great - it's all I really want in a phone.

I feel emotional about my girlfriend's pismo too, which I used for several years before I passed it on to her. It's 6 years old, used daily and troublefree. When things happen to my main machine, I always feel confident that the pismo will be there to get me through.

So, sure it's just a machine, but it is what you have put into it: the sweat and effort of all that work and writing, not to mention the companionship.... : )

BTW, still loving your macbook Peter?

Hmmm. Your Pismo has provided you with companionship? Is your girlfriend jealous?

Sorry, I couldn't resist. )

I felt the same way when I sold my 1.25ghz g4 15" Powerbook at the end of last year. I was thrilled to get my first iBook, but nothing has come close to sheer 'wow'ness of when I unpacked the 15" powerbook. I kept that laptop for the longest of any of my laptops and I was kinda sad when I took it to UPS.

Would the person who bought it take care if it like I did? Would they eventually have the same 'connection' with it?

As amazing as the 17" Powerbook is, that I have now, I don't have that 'connection' with it, but I do know that I won't be able to get a 15" anymore, the screen and resolution of the 17" has spoiled me.

Hey Pete,

You crack me up! I thought you were going to say you broke up with your GF, and wish you NEVER gave her your Pismo!

Yes, I am loving my MBP. But I miss my 1.67 too. Is yours still working perfectly? I hope all is good.

Still happy with my powerbook, but I have to admit that I'm starting to miss what I don't have....a brand new macbook pro! It's crazy the lust for power and speed just won't let go. Actually, a display as bright as my 20" CD would be just perfectly right for me at this point in my life. I'm impulsive, maybe I'll sell my powerbook and put in a few hundred for the lower end macbook - what do you think? It's so tempting.

If somebody can get Dragon Naturally Speaking 8 working on XP on a macbook pro, I'll use that as an excuse to make myself feel better about switching computers again: it's my RSI....

Pete,

I gotta tell you the MBP is a fast and sleek machine. Mine is perfect, but some people have had issues, that I think will be resolved by Apple. Not going to lie, and say I think you would love it. I was lucky to be able to exchange my PB for a MBP. I paid a restocking fee, and the difference, to get the 2.0. If I did not have that choice, I would still have my PB. If you do go for a MBP, order it one 1GB module, and then add another 1GB after you get it. It will be fun to see what you do.

There is nothing that I can say, but that I love my ibook. it is underpowered and such, but hell it has been with me through my best and worse moments. It has become a companion of mine because whereever I go, i take it with me. It has been with me when I i play music at a party, take notes in class, watching movies with girls, making random conversation, it is awesome. However I have always felt an attraction to the 12" powerbook, but for now, this laptop will do.. Cheers guys!

Seemingly I am not alone. I too essentially agree that it was just a machine and that there should be no emotional connection. However it is not necessarily the computing experience that affects us.

Pete, I share you thoughts about the T39. I had that phone for almost the same amount of time I had the Powerbook. I stopped using it one year ago when I received my K700. That has already become frustrating to use since the joystick is tempremental.

On a slight tangent, I get frustrated with anything that does not work: drawers that aren't smooth, alarm clocks and phones that are difficult to use, software which makes you read dialog boxes etc. The Powerbook was a joy to use in every sense. And I look forward to repeating that experience when I eventually receive my MacBook.

I almost sold my TiBook to my cousin last year and bought an iBook but couldn't logically justify the price for the upgrade...it wasn't that big of an improvement over what I already had. I was going to sell it to him for cheap...he's family.

Now that the Intels are out I'm hoping to grab the first, say, <$1500 portable. Fortunately I make enough money in what I do that I can hold on to my trusty TiBook...it'll be "retired" to the living room where it'll play DiVX files for me on my TV, occasionally be loaned out to friends or family who need a notebook for something-or-other, and will be my backup machine for Java software testing for this project my company is doing ("I've tested it on an Intel Mac and my PowerPC Mac, sir!").

Voch
