Macbook Pro, Installing OS X on External USB, Need Help

I'm using my macbook pro, I want to install os x on an external USB drive i bought for it today. I formated it with disk utility and set it to "HFS, and set it to use PC partitioning scheme", I put in my intel copy of OS X and it still says.

You cannot install OS X on this volume. Mac OS X Cannot Startup from this volume.

How am I supposed to do this? I can't have a backup drive now?

You can't boot OSX from USB drives. Apple only supports Firewire.
