I've been hearing the hard drive sputter these past few days, I think it's on it's last legs . My problem is that I didn't purchase Apple Care and my machine's over a year old (1 yr and 3 months). What should I do?

I just looked over a well-written article on how to replace the hard drive . . . it's rather daunting

it seems like a neverending labyrinth, but as long as you follow the directions and take your time, you'll be fine.

Just finished replacing my iBook G3 hard drive. Give yourself 3-4 hours to get it out, another 3-4 to get it back in. ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY FOR ME:
Extra lighting.
A strong magnifying glass (to get the power cable plug reseated squarely).
A guy who could get those glue tight screws out of the case (in the step where the magnet screw comes out, there are three or four more that are nearly locked in). Make sure your pressure is straight down and you don't strip those screws and screw holes or pay a professional to get those out.
The right tools. A small enough Phillips head screwdriver. A small Torx screwdriver. I read the pbfixit book web site and printed it out, and put screws from each step in separate sealed envelopes with plenty of explanation of where they came from.

After you get it back in you'll feel like you've given birth. But right now I'm installing OSX on my new Toshiba 40Gig hard drive! (P.S. Make sure you format the HD before you install OSX.)

Thanks for the encouragement guys. I'm having trouble deciding if it's actually the fan that's the problem or the hard drive itself. Sometimes when I hear that awful spinning/whirring sound the computer freezes and I can't do anything except watch the spinning beach ball, other times when the sound is only brief and I can do whatever it is I am doing while it's puttering. Any ideas or thoughts?

Yeah, it's going to a Genius Bar this weekend. At least they'll be able to diagnose it.
