I recently bought my first Mac, an Ibook g4 1.42 / 512MB/ 60 GB and now i want to capture some VHS videos in an external HD. But i also want to use this HD to backup files from a PC that my mothers have. If i format in fat32 i can´t create a file larger than 4GB, and i think this may be a problem in video capture/editing.
Is it possible to split this external HD in two partitions and format one in fat32 for PC backup and the other in Mac extended format so I can work with video?
Sorry about my english, i´m posting from brazil.
thanks

Disk Utility should let you do this. Depending on the hardware you are using and the length of the video, the 4gb limit should not be a problem. For example if you are using something like the eyetv to capture video from the tape and each video is 1 hour you will only have a problem if you import to DV.

thanks. do you recomend any capture devices?
i've read that if you capture in mpeg2 is harder to edit in imovie while in DV is more quickly because you dont need do decompress to edit, just need to compress in the end.

I don't know what's available in brazil or what your price range is, but search for miglia or go to elgato.com

That's not a big issue. The only compression bottleneck in iMovie would be when you import video clips...once the clips are in, it treats everything the same. Just make sure you don't capture in MPEG-1...you'll lose your audio when you bring it into iMovie. (MPEG-2 is fine.)

There is some software for the PC that will allow Windows to read HFS (Mac) formatted drives. I can't remember the name, however. Anyone else know it?
