Is your noise only present when the screen brightness is at certain levels (i.e. anywhere other than maximum or minimum)? If so, you have a faulty inverter and it will be replaced. If, on the other hand, you have a noise that's independent of screen brightness and shows up when your 'book is idle, you have the processor whine, which Apple is currently not servicing. To fix this whine, try the software fix from red sweater as posted in this thread:

It's so sad that I know all the annoying problems with the MBP and how to mitigate them before I even own one.

and remember the advice: never get anything first generation from Apple as there are always bugs to be worked out. Wait on the Rev. b's and most of the problems will be fixed or at least you'll know to not get a MacBook Pro because they are so loud.

Mine got the inverter board high pitch buzz, so it's now in line for a repair. Other than that it was a perfect machine, the infamous "whine" was also there, but it's pretty faint and covered easy with ambient sound.
Anyhow, it also only "whines" when both cores are almost 0%, so unless you bought a MBP to let it rest doing nothing all the time, you won't get it. Just having iTunes playing in the background, which I always do most of the time, makes it to not whine, and even if it were the sound would cover it.
My current PowerBook 12" also have whirrs and sounds, but as the MBP whine, all get covered by the smallest ambient sound.
On the other hand, the faulty inverter board high pitch sound was a brain eater ....

thanks for the little tidbit, but that means nothing to me... i had a rev. z (or something like it) ibook and they still hadnt fixed the biggest problem - the worlds worst power adapter. if i had taken that advise i would STILL be waiting... nah. all machines are imperfect. for some reason this thing resets sticky keys after restart i can live with that. someone else might not be able to... the buzzing is just not something i can live with, other people seem not mind. but waiting for the the perfect machine is blah...

yeah i need to figure out what i have..
it sounds more a whistle/hiss than a "whine" i tried to make an appointment for today, but they were booked... so it have to wait till friday. its annoying whatever it is. and hopefully once i have someone at apple look at it they will tell me more.

For those worried about the machine. I do get a whine during 3D gameplay sometime, but I think that's just the fan, other than that I'm good. Unless this is a problem, this machine has no problem and is wonderful!
