I applied the hack to enable monitor spanning on my iBook.

I was using the Apple Video Adapater to watch video and play games on my television. It was working great, until I accidentally activated video rotation while having the iBook connected to my television.

Now, the iBook actcs as if it cannot detect that it's connected to the television. The screen goes blue, then a light gray. If I move the mouse, sometimes I can see the cursor move on the screen, and I see it rotated on the television. Most of the time, the system hangs.

If I connect the iBook to a standard VGA or lcd monitor using the VGA adapter, it works fine.

Is there anyway to kill a preference setting to set the iBook back to default to recognize the television, or perhaps run something in terminal to change the setting?

I'm using a 12 inch iBook 1.33 GHz G4, OS 10.4.5, and trying to connect to a NTSC televison through a composite connection using the Apple Video Adapter.

Thank you for any input!

You can't turn rotation off?

no... I can't access the option to turn off rotation, because I can't see anything when I connect the iBook to the TV (the iBook's screen either goes blank, or the comp freezes.) And the option to turn off rotation isn't there when a secondary display isn't connected. Even if I connect a standard monitor, the preferences for that monitor are different than those for a television. I'm prolly just overlooking something, haha...

hmmm, is there some sort of file where configuration is stored? If you could find one, you could try editing it in textedit. Usually, if configuration is stored in a file, if you edit it you will see stuff like

rotationdefault=yes

or something like that. If you can't find anything like that, I would try reinstalling Screen Spanning Doctor. That may reset all of you options in the program.

That could definitely work. I wonder if the rotation configuration is written into the firmware. That would make things a real *****.

You could try resetting the firmware, whatever that entails.

This is why hacks are called hacks.

I had a similar problem but with a VGA monitor instead of a TV.

The way I fixed it was, I could still see "normal" on the iBook screen, just couldn't see anything on the VGA monitor. I went to system prefs -> display, and set it to "mirror" displays and to show the display icon in the menu bar.

With the display icon in the menu bar, you can now set resolution, etc via the menu bar for both monitors on your iBook monitor where the menu is. Then I unchecked mirror displays, so it would span again, changed the resolution on the VGA monitor a few times via the display menu, and it fixed itself.

Well thats what hacks are, maybe you just shouldn't do them! You always risk messing up your computer when you do a hack on it.

I'm sure the OP understands the inherent dangers in using hacks.

But what the OP is looking for is help finding a solution. One of the beauties of computers is learning from them. I myself learned to work them fairly well by breaking my dad's computer back in the mid 80s and having it fixed before he got home or risk getting a spanking (to put it mildly).

Does a reinstall reflash the firmware? If not, I am not sure if that would work.
