hi there,
i've got the most weird problem with my g4 15" powerbook. the screen turns blue for a couple of seconds randomly every other minute or so, sometimes more often, sometimes it stays normal for 10 or 15 minutes. before it turns blue i can't move the cursor anymore for about one second. sometimes it shows the spinning wheel shortly before and after getting blue, sometimes it's even two wheels but half size. i've been to an apple shop already, the guy there told me that he has never seen something like this before, but that it's mo
st likely a software problem and i should reinstall osX. i did this but it didn't help at all, the screen kept turning blue even during the installation process and now it's just the same as before. has anyone any idea what's wrong with my computer?
thanks for your help guys, i'm really devastated

That totally warrants a return. If a genious suggest something like reinstalling and that not working, it's time to start a claim on the warranty.

I can't imagine any Apple tech saying this is "most likely a software problem!" How could this be a software problem? It sounds like it's motherboard related...and I hope you've got Applecare, because you should call them right away.

And make sure that you've got everything backed up!

Your symptoms sound like the external monitor detect signal is getting shorted somehow, making the computer think that you are attaching an external display. When this happens, check your Displays preferences or the Displays menu to see if a generic second monitor is there. I'll bet it is. Check the DVI port or the s-video port to see if there is any debris or anything in there. If you have a monitor or dongle for the DVI or s-video available to you, try inserting and removing it a few times to see if it clears anything. If it still happens, the short is on the logic board, which would then need a replacement as mentioned. Hopefully, this is not the case.

Good luck!

hey steve, thanks so much, that was some great advice, i guess. i couldn't find any second monitor in the preferences but after inserting and removing a DVI-plug several times my computer runs fine for one entire day now. things can be so simple! i really hope it stays like that (two days ago it didn't turn blue for half a day or so and than started again all of a sudden)
my warranty run out about one month ago, and i definately couldn't afford a new logic board, so i really don't know how to thank you!
cheers,
august
