Can someone give me an answer to this question!!! I recently received an Ibook G3(600MHZ) which makes noise when I turn it on. I was told this is the HD. Is the HD dying? I ran the hardware test and everything came out fine. Is this something I should be concern with. A friend told me to give it a couple of days and it should be fine. I still experience the noise when turning on the laptop. Should I be concern????? Help!!!

Is it a mechanical, sort of a whine then click? If so, this is normal, and is the CD drive.

Could you record the noise or elaborate more?

Its more of a scratching sound when you first turn on the computer. You normally hear it when you start the system and it is running all the programs.

A friend told me it is the sound you hear when the computer is reading data to the hard drive. I'm just checking because I want to make sure the hard drive is not dying on me!

Ok? And what do you mean running all the programs, I am sure that a G3 ibook would not have enought RAM to run all programs at once.

Thanks for the information. I did upgrade the RAM from 250 to 384. The person I purchased the Ibook from sent out another one(Ibook) as well as adding tiger, microsoft powerpoint, microsoft excel, toast 6. and safari. The noise when I turn on the computer sounds like a scratching sound.
