Hi all,

I've been considering getting a MBP for a development machine (mainly scientific programming + computer science course) but I'm not sure it is well suited in terms of usability. I am mostly concerned about the keyboard because if I decide to get one the kbd would have to be top-notch and comfortable. I have used a powerbook only once for a few hours but the kbd didn't feel quite good. I would like to ask you about your opinion. I will probably pop in the store and test the MBP before buying one but still - what are your experiences?

Regards,
gamehack

the MBP is a fine machine for that role, but the keyboard is a consideration. At first glance it does look identical to the Powerbook G4 aluminum keyboard, however it is much cheaper - materials-wise, than the earlier machines. It feels that way, and it is already starting to wear down. The keyboard is fine for my typing and my usage - which is admittedly very heavy, and I have always preferred laptop keyboards over their desktop counterparts. The MBP keyboard is not one of the better ones I've used - the G4 keyboard was better in terms of feel and overall inspiration of quality - however, at least the foundation/background/floor of the keyboard is solid, which is more than I can say for some Compaqs and HPs I've used...

The keyboards in Apple's pro laptops are generally considered to be good, second only to (or tied with, depending who you ask) the keyboard in IBM's (now Lenovo's) ThinkPads.

EpoqueObscuri is the only person I've heard say the quality has declined from the PB to the MBP.

The quality took a hit when the name switched from Powerbook to MacBook...
