Hi,

I have a early 2004 iBook G4 (800Mhz) that I have started recently having issues with. When my wife turned it off and went to turn it back on the other day it made the chime noise, got to the gray screen with the apple and the little spinning gray icon...however that it is. The spinning icon freezes (not the beachball..the gray thing under the apple).

We rebooted a few times and was able to get passed this gray screen and it would then get stuck at a solid blue screen....nothing else.

Any ideas what may be causing this....we had the logic board replaced by apple in late 2004 (when the iBook was around 6 months old) and have not had any problems since then...that is at least until now. The iBook is well out of warranty and I know for me to have a new logic board put in the iBook would not be worth it.

Any ideas???

Thanks,

Kris

Boot from the iBook install CD's and see what the SMART status of your hard drive is, if it's verified then everything should be OK with it. Repair permissions and try to boot again, at worst you will probably have to do an archive and install.

If the drive is failing, hopefully you have access to another Mac, put the iBook in Target Disk Mode by pressing the T key on startup, plug it into another Mac and backup all your important files.

Next is to replace the hard drive if it is failing, this can be done by yourself if you are good with computers, or you can get your local Apple store or Apple repair shop to replace it for you although it may be a bit expensive.

Good luck,

Sean.

But note for apple to replace your hard drive it has to be a hard drive from the apple store which is even more expensive, my best adivce, just go and get a cheap but good internal hard drive, then go to ifixit.com and they have awsome extensive guides to help you out if you get lost, just be sure not to lose any of the screws!
