I have a 1ghz DVI 12in PowerBook, I was using it the other day and I shut it down and now it will not boot to the HDD or SuperDrive. I get the start chime, then the apple and if I am lucky I get the wheel then the video blurs and the system freezes, other wise I get the start chime, then the apple screen then the screen where it is in 3-4 different languages to tell you how to turn the machine off. I have pulled the HDD out and it still does the same thing, also disconnected the SuperDrive (but left the HDD connected) and still get the same thing. I disconnected both the HDD and SuperDrive and I get the screen with the folder and question mark. I have pulled all non necessary (by that I mean it has to be connected for the system to even boot) connections/hardware and still same thing. Also I have reset the PMU and PRAM.
I am thinking it is a bad logic board.
If it is a bad logic board can I put a 1.33 DVI or 1.5ghz DVI board in instead of a 1ghz? The boards appear to be the same except for one little connector above the DC board. The 1.33 and 1.5 have this and the 1ghz doesn't. What does this connect to?

You don't mention whether you have an SO-DIMM for extra memory installed. If you do, try running without it in. The 4 languages screen is called a kernel panic (many mentions on this board). Can you boot from your install DVD? Can you run the Apple Hardware Test?
The boards are not swappable. I don't recall the connector you mention, but the heatsink designs changed as well.

I don't have the extra memory installed. I can not boot to the install DVD. I get either the kernal panic or the Apple screen with a big set of vertical lines through about an 1.5in wide all the way across the screen and a smaller set below them. I was however able to boot to the Apple Hardware Test and here is the error I am getting on the extened test 2MEM/1/4 DIMM0/BUILT-IN, quick test 2MEM/104/4 DIMM0/BUILT-IN. Apple Hardware Test ver 2.0.5
I can't believe I forgot about the harware test, DUH, brain fart, I should have known better being as how I use to be an Apple repair technican about 2 yrs ago.
Since it is the built in memory that has gone bad, looks like time for a new logic board............should have bought apple care.

My 12" Powerbook's built in memory dissapeared. So I assume it completely died, and it's just using the extra ram that I installed. If you are going to get a new logic board anyway, maybe you might want to desolder the internal ram and just install and extra chip on the outside?
