This problem has just developed on my old and (mostly) faithful tibook (500mhz) - I can't turn it on or reboot it without using the hard reboot swith at the back ( you know the one you poke with a paper clip). I think this just resets the PRAM right? (when it does boot I need to reset the date).

The regular powerbuuton doesn't work at all - I hear the mac chime but the screen stays dark. The tibook doesn't turn off properly either most times either, I usually have to force quit an app (usually suitcase, but its a dog of a program) or it freezes entirely.

Things I've done recently that could have caused the problem; ran a tiger update about a week ago, and I played a network game of quake 2 a few nights ago that hung my computer (I suddenly get stuck halfway inside a wall with the sound effects looping 'changchangchangchancgchangchangchangchang'....... .(sound familiar?)
Haven't used that program since tho.

can advise me of a fix?

thanks

Have you tried booting in single user mode or tried switching users to your safe test user?

thanks voch and romeosc

romeosc I only have one user, me as admin, on my system - can you explain a little more what you mean and why that could cause problems?

voch - actuall resetting the power manager is exactly what I've been doing (sorry I forget the name for the switch). but I can re-phrase my problem a bit more clearly now;

** I am unable to start my computer up after shutdown WITHOUT resetting the power manager.**

anyone?
