Hi,
I'm new to these forums and relatively new to macs, I'd been using pcs for years and decided to make the switch to a cleaner smoother operating system and it was definitely the right choice. I hear that there is a new intel chip available that can allow windows xp to be run with "bootcamp". I have a few old windows computer games that I would love to be able to play and currently have an iBook G4 and was wondering if I could buy the intel chip and install it into this laptop and then do the whole bootcamp thing?

thanks for your time,
Peejfish

No.

For one, iBooks (and PowerBooks) have permanently-soldered-on processors. The architecture is also completely different (PowerPC vs. x86). The motherboard design, socket design, and operating system would prevent it all from working.

Welcome to the forum!

Unfortunately, I have bad news for you. The G4 chip used in the current iBook and the Intel chips currently being released are 100% incompatable. There is no way to simply swap chips and run Windows. At present, the only Macs with Intel processors are the MacBook Pro (a high-end laptop, running around $2000), the iMac, and the Mac Mini (consumer-line desktop computers).

HOWEVER, very strong rumors are currently flying around that new iBooks (possibly called MacBooks) with the Intel Core processor will be announced within the next month or so. If you really want those old Windows games and can afford to wait a while, I'd do so.

Once again, welcome to the forums, and welcome to the Mac side!

How old are we talking? If we are talking DOS old, download DOSBox and have a blast. I am still trying to solve Ultima V about 20 years later . . .

My 1 Ghz Titanium PowerBook can run Win XP using VirtualPC fast enough to let me play SimCopter.
