so, the new 17" MBP is supposed to be presented as early as tomorrow. since many users on bulletin boards mainly complain about defunct machines, I just wanted to reiterate that I'm really happy w/ my 17" and I won't switch to a Intel-17" until Rev. C or D.
this machine is very reliable, never crashed on me, doesn't get hot (fans never kicked in) thus super-silent, gets 4.5h on battery w/ AP on, etc.
I use it mainly as a desktop replacement but I still have the portability of a laptop if needed. the 17" screen estate is awesome and provides for plenty of space, even when I mess w/ PS. yes, the new MBP will be faster- so what? I use mine mainly for internet-related things, office, and PS- and the speed is just fine.
I'm very happy with this machine and will continue using it for a long time.

I loved my revA PB17, too. It was (and still is!) a great desktop replacement suitable for many.
I happen to need some horsepower from time to time, so this MBP was definitely a nice upgrade for me.
I suspect the PB17 will become the next Pismo -- a machine many will use until they simply cannot find the spare (and used) replacement parts to keep them running.

Well I have the 17" 1.33Ghz Rev B Powerbook. I love the thing too. It's outstanding....however today I just bought a MacBook Pro 2.0Ghz at Fry's and I must say this machine is well above the Powerbooks!!!!
It's really fast and the bottom stays only luke warm. I have played 1080 movies while running google earth at the same time and it only gets warm at the bottom. The fan never turns on and if it has I haven't been able to tell. The screen is exactly the same brightness as my 23" Cinema display while my Powerbook is quite low on the brightness side and the keyboard is extrmemlely bright on the backlight.
So while my 17" is not going to be replaced as of yet the MacBook is the best ever.
It really felt good to shop around and see the any software that I wanted for my new MacBook was available to me thanks to Intel and Bootcamp.

Yeah, despite the obvious superiority of the MacBooks, I would really find it hard to justify the expense at the moment.
I'm really happy with my PB17 and the things I can do with it. The performance is good (not stellar, but acceptable), but the fan can easily kick in while running Photoshop, Flash, and several browsers. Or just going to a flash site can easily necessitate the fans. I've been upgrading it slowly, and i now have 1.5 GBs of RAM. Next up will probably be a speedy 7200RPM drive.
When I do upgrade to a new machine though, maybe one or two years down the road, I know I'm in for one hell of a kick in the pants in terms of performance! Those machines are sweet, and are only going to get better with Intel's Merom and its successors.
As for screen size, even if they do have a 17" MacBook at that time, I'm really on the fence as to whether I'd go for the larger screen, or go with something smaller. I find that I only really need the extra space when I'm at home, which is 99% of the time. I know that sounds ridiculous, and that I should get a desktop instead, but it is so useful to have the option of portability when I need it. But I think in the future, I'll spring for a smaller laptop and use the extra cash to get a nice cinema display. Best of both worlds.

I agree with you, it's hard to justify the expense at the moment but if you see it in another way you probably could get 2000$ CND for a max out PB17 (rev C in my case). So the the expense really is about 2200CND for a max out MBP 15 or 17. in a few years from now the PB wont be worth much! So you'll have to chunk out almost 4200$CND for your new MBP!!! THAT'S a big expense!
I have being doing that for a couple of my Mac (to sell at a good price after 2 years to finance part of the price of the new one) and I think it works well.
beside I'm posting on this board while i'm waiting (1 hour!!!) for compressor to encode one of my work for a demo DVD. So even if I dont encode video or edit every other day, the MBP extra performance would be most wellcome.
