Hi, am having a weird problem with the modem in my g4 powerbook. It was working fine yesterday, but today, not so great.

The modem doesn't seem to create a dial tone. When i hit connect it stays silent for a few seconds then dials the number, but all i get is an engadged signal, none of that weird whooshing sound that means its connecting to the ISP.

None of the settings have changed in terms of my dial up account, and the modem seems to be working fine, it just.... No dialtone, and it's bloody annoying!

Any ideas?

try connnecting a normal handset to the telephone line and see if it is the line first, not the modem causing you concern.

Does a regular phone work on this line? Have you tried dialing the number with a phone to see that it is still there? Have you tried replacing the phone cable? If you have no dial tone, that's a problem with the line.

Have tried several different wall jacks and cables, none work. Phones work fine on the lines and our iMac is able to reach the ISP using the same settings.
