Hi,

Many of us are looking forward to see a smaller macbook pro in the near future. But with the heat issues that are pretty major with the 15" models, are any of you concerned with the possible heat issues of the smaller ones?

If Apple feels heat is an issue, they can make the case larger and include more cooling hardware or underclock the hardware (as the did with the 15"). Apple feels the 15" is fine with regard to heat, and I'd expect the 13" to be no different in terms of how hot it gets.

There's always the possibility too that they'd use Core Solo, although I'm optimistic for Core Duo, considering the Mac mini supports Core Duo too.

If they do use Core Duo in a 13", you can count on it being lower clocked though, for a number of reasons:

1) Power utilization
2) Product differentiation
3) Cost

P.S. I'm struck at just how many people want this 13" unit. I knew it would be popular, but it seems that now the 17" has been announced, all the 13 inchers have come out of the woodwork. I guess we are getting impatient...

Any chance of say a 12" or smaller ultraportable?

Is there any value in holding onto the 12" powerbook that I have? If the smallest that they make will be a 13", I can see how the current 12" powerbook could maintain some of its value.

The 15" g4 powerbooks are dropping in price like crazy.

Well, IIRC 12" 1280x800 widescreen LCDs for laptops do exist, so it's a possibility.

Now that's just wishful thinking. The 12" PowerBook is more poorly spec'd in some ways than even the 12" iBook. While the 12" iBook requires an external screen to work with Aperture 1.1, the 12" PowerBook doesn't work with Aperture 1.1 at all. The 12" PowerBook's GeForce Go 5200 does not impress.

Would you suggest that I sell my 12" powerbook at this point? I've sold my g5 and titanium powerbook, and bought the 12" at a decent price. I'm just trying to keep the cheapest setup that can fulfill my basic computer needs. The new machines really hurt the resale values of the g4's and g5's.

Thanks!

Well, if you need it, then keep it.

I sold my iBook, but only because I didn't absolutely need it, and my friend did. Otherwise I would have kept it until at least mid-May.
