Hi
Sorry if this has already come up - I've done a search and haven't found anything.
At some point over the last couple of weeks, my USB drives on G4 PB (OSX 10.4.6) seem to have started to reject my USB flash drive, USB hub etc.
The USB drives work fine with my usb mouse and printer but doesn't recognise my flash drive. The flash drive works perfectly on a PC.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Mike

I have a similar problem, so would be grateful if anyone can suggest a solution...
One thing to check is that the flash drive is formatted as "FAT" file system - you need to do that from your windows pc. Check the help function on how to do it, but I think you can do it from 'Disk Maintenance'
Mine is already FAT, but doesn't work on my G5. I though it would just appear as a drive that I can cut and paste into - am I wrong?

Well, what exactly happens? When you plug in the drive, do you get the error message that the machine doesn't recognize the drive and requires formatting, or does it just not show up? Do you see the drive in Disk Utility when it is plugged in?

Sometimes USB flash drives do just quit working completely.

Yikes! I don't like the sound of that. I just spend 140 euro on a 4 GB one and I'm planning to use it for all my personal backups.
I did get an error message, it says the device is not recognised and offers some choices - I choose 'initialize' which dirceted me to Disk Utility. That's where I got lost as there was no direction on what I should do next. So eventually I decided to 'Erase' and choose 'Ms-dos' format. It has done the trick. My photos are copying over right now!
Regards
Gerry

I would assume spending 140 euros on a 4gb removable drive would constitute it having a good warranty and being a quality piece of gear. Not always but take in to consideration, a lot of USB flash drives fail.... a lot cost next to nothing.

It does have a warranty and it's working perfectly at the moment. When you say a lot of them fail - do they fail right from the start or suddenly give up the ghost at a later stage for no apparent reason?
I worried about backing up my photos more than anything else, but I guess even if the flash does fail I still have them on my Mac!

My experience, and that of a bunch of people I know is that it can happen at random. Keep in mind these things often get carried around in a pocket which is far from an optimal environment for data storage.
