How do I test the speed of my MBP? and optimize?

She's feeling a little sluggish.

I'm curious why no one is responding to this? Is there any way to test my laptop?

If you want "interesting" (and I use that term loosely) but ultimately useless performance numbers, run Xbench.

You could run Cinebench too. At least then you could meaningfully compare to other identical systems.

I don't know that there's a whole lot that you can do to optimize your MBP. I own a powerbook 1.67 with a 7200 rpm drive (soon to be an MBP with the same), though, and I did get a performance boost by deleting the partition and reinstalling MacOS X again. Call me superstitious, but I'd swear it helped.

The only other things I can think that you could do to speed things up is to use Launchbar and PathFinder. They'll give you a net speed increase just because you'll be able to interact with the computer faster.

If your machine seems to be running more than a standard deviation below the mean score, I'd make sure that you either don't have any weird processes running in the background or that you don't have a misbehaving driver. Consider an OS reinstall if its still doing it.

I wasn't sure where to post this, so I just chose to dig up this older thread...

Some interesting Cinebench scores posted below. Scores from my G5 are slightly older, done on OS X 10.4.1 some months back.

PowerMac G5 dual processor 2.5GHz, 2.5GB RAM, X800XT, 2560x1600 pixels, 10.4.1
1xCPU = 356
2xCPU = 615
C4D shading = 340
OpenGL Software = 1001
OpenGL Hardware = 1865

Athlon XP 3200+ Barton 2.2GHz, 400MHz FSB, 1GB RAM, GeForce 6800GT, 1600x1200 pixels x 2 (two 20"), WinXPsp2
1xCPU = 267
C4D shading = 308
OpenGL Software = 1295
OpenGL Hardware = 2594

MacBook Pro (15.4") 2.16GHz, 2GB RAM, 2560x1600 pixels, 10.4.6
1xCPU = 330
2xCPU = 620
C4D shading = 380
OpenGL Software = 1447
OpenGL Hardware = 2777

The MacBook Pro @ 2.16GHz bests my 2.5GHz dual processor G5! Amazing. Its a freaking notebook computer and its faster than my G5 tower.

The multi-CPU score of the 2.16GHz Intel CoreDuo is equal to a dual Opteron 250 and faster than an Athlon64 X2 4400+.

Anyway, just wanted to share. Color me impressed.
